Story of Osiris and Isis.

Osiris and Isis

Note; Osiris is considered to be the first mummy.

The story begins with Geb, the Earth god, and Nut, the sky goddess’s children: Osiris, Isis, Set and Nepthys. These gods were prominently worshipped in Ancient Egypt and so the story of Osiris and Isis came to life.

Osiris being the oldest came to be King of Egypt and married his sister Isis. He is a good King and gains the respect of all those in his command all over Earth as well as the gods that dwelled in the netherworld.

Set, his brother is very jealous of Osiris because of the respect he commands. One day he transforms himself into a vicious monster and attacks Osiris, killing him. Set proceeds to cut Osiris into pieces and distributes them all over Egypt.

Since Osiris is dead, set becomes King of Egypt and marries Nepthys, his sister. Nepthys feels sorry for her sister’s loss who weeps over her husband death endlessly. Isis being powerful herself decides to find her husband and bring him back to life long enough for them to spawn a child. Accompanied by Nepthys, Isis roams Egypt collecting her husband’s pieces as she reassembles them. This she does with the help of Thoth, a deity with great magical and healing powers and Anubis, god of embalming and funeral rites. Set and his followers try to damage Osiris’ remains but Isis and her allies protect it. On completion of collecting the pieces she breathes life into him and resurrects him. Osiris becomes the first mummy. At long last her quest is successful and they are together again. Later she becomes pregnant. Osiris revival is not permanent and he descends into the underworld and becomes lord and judge of the dead. His kingship is reborn in his son.

Their child is named Horus, the hawk god. Isis tries her best to hide from Set because Horus is a threat to his throne. She stays among the humans who don’t know her and sometimes appeals for their help. She is also assisted by other deities to guard her son in her absence. At one point seven minor deities who travel and guard Isis take revenge on a wealthy woman who refuses to help Isis by stinging the woman’s son. Isis is compassionate and heals the blameless child. Horus as a child is predisposed to danger for example from snakes which seem to target him since they are agents of Set. Isis sometimes cures her son and when she is unable to pleads or threatens other deities for example Ra or Geb to cure him.

As an Adult Horus presents a case to the court of gods, Ennead declaring that he, not Set, was the rightful King of Egypt. After lengthy deliberations, Set challenges Horus to a contest with the winner claiming the throne to Egypt.

Set, being one not to play fair cheats on several challenges and emerges victorious. Isis, Horus’s mother angered by this decides to aid her son in setting a trap for Set. Isis traps Set and is about to kill him when Set begs for mercy which she grants and lets him go. On hearing this Horus gets angry with his mother and rages against her. This earns him contempt of the gods who decide that the nature of the last match would be decided by Set.

On the last round of the contest Set decides it would be a boat race and to make things harder for Horus he says the boats should be made of stone. Horus being a tricky character builds his boat with wood covered with limestone plaster making it seem as if it’s made of stone. Set cuts the top of a mountain to serve as his boat and places it on water. The gods assemble for the race. Set’s boat sinks and all the gods laugh at him. This laughter angers Set who shifts into a hippopotamus and attacks Horus’ boat. Horus fights off Set and the other gods intervene before he kills Set. The final verdict of the gods is that the match is a draw. Although the gods were sympathetic to Horus, they remembered his reaction towards his mother for letting set go this did not completely support him.

The court drafts a letter to Osiris asking for his counsel. Osiris responds that his son is the rightful King and should be given the throne. He emphasizes that his brother gained the throne through murder therefore was no King. The Sun and stars being on Osiris’ side descend to the underworld plunging the world into darkness. The gods finally agree Horus should be king since it was his birthright. Horus is made King of Egypt.

Note: this is just one of the many versions of the myth
